Welsh council leader ‘concerned’ about impact immigration plan could have on care

Cllr Huw Thomas, leader of Cardiff Council, has expressed concern over the UK Government’s plans to restrict the recruitment of care workers from overseas. In a recent statement, he highlighted the potential negative impact this could have on the already strained social care system.

The UK Government’s proposed immigration policy would introduce a minimum salary threshold of £25,600 for skilled workers entering the country. This would include skilled care workers, making it much harder for them to enter the UK and work in the social care sector.

Speaking on the issue, Cllr Thomas said, “The UK Government’s plans to limit the recruitment of care workers from overseas is certainly a matter of concern. Social care is already facing significant challenges and this policy could only make matters worse.” He went on to say that the proposed salary threshold would exclude many skilled care workers from entering the UK, leaving a significant gap in the workforce.

The social care sector in the UK is heavily reliant on overseas workers, with an estimated 17% of the workforce coming from outside the country. With an ageing population and increasing demand for care services, restrictions on overseas recruitment could have serious consequences for both the sector and those in need of care.

Cllr Thomas also emphasized the important contribution that overseas care workers make to the UK. “These workers are dedicated, compassionate and highly skilled individuals who play a vital role in providing care and support to some of the most vulnerable members of our society. We should be welcoming and supporting them, not restricting their entry into the country.”

The proposed policy has also been met with criticism from the care sector. In a joint statement, the UK Homecare Association and the National Care Forum expressed their concerns, stating that the new rules would “significantly and negatively impact the ability to recruit and retain care staff.” They also highlighted the risk of exacerbating the existing staff shortages in the care sector.

With a shortage of homegrown talent and an ageing population, it is clear that the UK needs to continue to rely on overseas workers to fulfill the demand for care workers. The proposed restrictions could not only have a detrimental effect on the social care sector, but also on the individuals and families who rely on these services.

Cllr Thomas called on the UK Government to reconsider their plans and to work with local authorities and the care sector to find a solution that supports and strengthens the social care system. “We need a sustainable and long-term approach to recruitment and retention of care workers, which recognizes the invaluable contribution of overseas workers and ensures that the social care needs of our communities are met.”

In conclusion, the UK Government’s plans to restrict overseas recruitment of care workers is a cause for concern for Cllr Huw Thomas and many others in the social care sector. The policy has the potential to worsen the already existing challenges and could have a significant impact on the quality of care provided to those in need. It is important for the Government to take into account the implications of this policy and work towards finding a solution that supports the social care system and the dedicated care workers who play a vital role in it.
