Cambridge University Boat Club’s Sophia Hahn has been selected to represent her university in the upcoming Boat Race against Oxford University. As she prepares for the intense competition, she takes a moment to reflect on her journey to this momentous achievement.
Growing up in Germany, Hahn was always passionate about sports and spent most of her free time playing various sports. However, it wasn’t until her first year at Cambridge University that she discovered her love for rowing. She was drawn to the sport’s team dynamic and the adrenaline rush of competing on the water.
Hahn joined the first-year novice squad at Cambridge University Boat Club and immediately fell in love with the sport. She spent countless hours practicing and training, determined to improve her skills and make it to the varsity team.
Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was selected for the women’s second boat in her second year. Although she was thrilled to be a part of the team, Hahn didn’t want to stop there. She set her sights on the ultimate goal – representing her university in the iconic Boat Race against Oxford.
But the road to Boat Race selection was not an easy one. Hahn faced numerous challenges and setbacks, both on and off the water. She had to balance her rigorous training schedule with her studies, often sacrificing social events and leisure time in order to excel in both areas.
Despite the challenges, Hahn remained determined and focused on her goal. She credits her teammates and coaches for their unwavering support and motivation, pushing her to be the best version of herself.
Hahn’s perseverance paid off when she was selected to be a part of the women’s Blue Boat for the 2021 Boat Race. As she reflects on her journey, she is grateful for the lessons she has learned along the way.
“It has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey to be selected for the Boat Race,” says Hahn. “I have learned the importance of discipline, resilience and teamwork. These are valuable life skills that I will carry with me beyond my time at Cambridge.”
Hahn also acknowledges the significance of being a part of the historic Boat Race, which has been on the annual calendar since 1829. The race is not only a symbol of sportsmanship and competition but also a celebration of tradition and camaraderie between the two prestigious universities.
